Guido Basso - Sleigh Ride (1968)
Guido Basso was born in Montreal, Quebec, on September 27, 1937. He grew up in the Little Italy neighbourhood of Montreal, in an Italian-Canadian family. He began playing the trumpet at the age of nine. He studied at the Conservatoire de musique du Québec à Montréal. His professional music career started in his teens, under the name "Stubby Basso".
Basso had a professional career as a composer, conductor, arranger, trumpeter, flugelhornist, and harmonica player. The Canadian Encyclopedia wrote that Basso was "one of Canada's pre-eminent jazz trumpeters", and that "he was credited with the theory that one attacks the trumpet and makes love to a flugelhorn".
In 1963, he became music director for CBLT's Nightcap, a job he held until 1967. He subsequently held a number of music director positions with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), as well as being active as a performer.
His 1968 Christmas album "Christmas Today" is full of his unique trumpet sound and gives Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass a run for their money. The LP was released with two covers - the first with Guido, the second with a woman dressed for Christmas.
In later years, Basso organized and led big band concerts at the CNE Bandshell, featuring Dizzy Gillespie, Quincy Jones, Woody Herman, Benny Goodman, Count Basie and Duke Ellington. For his contributions to Canadian jazz, he was made a Member of the Order of Canada in 1994.
Guido continued to play with Canadian big bands and on dozens of more albums throughout the 1980s, 1990s, and into the 2000s.
On February 13, 2023, Basso's death was announced on Instagram by his wife Kristin. He was 85 years old.

This song was originally introduced to Americans in 1980 movie "Melvin and Howard". The movie tells the story of Melvin Dummar who found an old man wandering in the middle of the Nevada desert in 1967. That man was multi-billionaire Howard Hughes. In a memorable movie scene (which can be found elsewhere on UA-cam), Dummar sings this song to Hughes. In real life, Hughes passed away in 1976 and a...

Classic! I never saw this before (before my time I think), but Frank Nelson was always magnificent, even when toned down here from his hysterical Jack Benny encounters, and good to see "Herman Glimpsher" / Bill Idleson in a role too. All modern commercials go past me and do not engage....I always liked the more commercial of the 1960s into the 1990s with a storyline and stars or established and well-liked character actors in roles.

The Telethons with Jerry Lewis were a bore every year after Sammy Davis Jr died. The Telethons should have had younger Comedian guys take Hosting 20 years before he was finally replaced by that time it was too late. Billy Crystal type of guy at the time in 1990 was the excellent type of Annual Host that could have taken over the MDA Telethon renaming it the Billy Crystal Annual Labor Day MDA Telethon.

Damn, I can't believe how powerful this is. It's like listening to the ramblings of a grandparent in a hospice room knowing damn well the end is coming soon. I never thought this randomly made tie-in game could give such a beautiful send-off to a legend. ...And it's the same devs as 007 Agent Under Fire and Everything or Nothing who would go on to make Dead Space. Legendary games from my childhood.

As the comments below amply illustrate, this is a very misunderstood movie. It's amazing how many people take it seriously. Harpo Marx playing Isaac Newton playing "Beautiful Dreamer" (written more than a century after Newton died) is a measure of its tongue-in-cheek take on human history.
